If you consider that natural capital plays a decisive role in the fair and sustainable recovery and the progress towards a positive future for nature and people, if you want to incorporate nature-related aspects in your company but do not know where to start, or if you have some knowledge about the natural capital approach, but want to strengthen concepts, deepen your company’s relationship with nature and learn about success stories that can serve as a reference, you will find of interest “Nature-Incore: Nature at the heart of decision-making” training initiative by Ecoacsa.
The last two years have been particularly challenging because of the unfortunate coronavirus pandemic, which has acted as an important reminder of the close relationship between human, economic and planetary health. This has led to an intensified interest in putting natural capital and biodiversity issues at the centre of policy, both at national, EU and global levels. And, most especially, to design rules and regulations that support actions and initiatives aimed at ensuring that these environmental elements are considered in private sector decision-making linked to the management of the natural environment.
The free online course Nature-Incore has been created to support this purpose by training professionals in the natural capital approach, through information and training on concepts, knowledge, and tools, so that they have a better understanding of the relationship of their organisations with nature and contribute to incorporate it into decision-making.
The course is aimed at sustainability and environmental professionals and managers of SMEs in the Community of Madrid and Catalonia on the natural capital approach so that they can incorporate it into the daily practice of their companies and organisations.
How will we do it? Through a carefully designed theoretical-practical programme to learn easily and at your own pace key concepts, which applications of the natural capital approach are best suited to the reality of each business, and which tools and methodologies can be most useful for identifying, measuring and assessing the impacts and dependencies that companies and organisations have on nature, among other topics.
The programme is structured in the following four modules:
- 1. Introduction to the natural capital approach.
- 2. Where to start? Natural capital assessment, key concepts, and tools.
- 3. How to integrate assessment results.
- 4. Tracking, monitoring and communicating corporate performance on natural capital.
Driving cultural change in business

To respond to regional and national challenges related to biodiversity from the perspective of the natural capital approach, the Nature-Incore initiative will organise training actions in different formats to reinforce the competences of the students who have been trained in the natural capital approach and in the valuation of ecosystem services throughout the course.
In addition, work will be carried out to analyse the students’ competences in the field of natural capital to know their situation and identify possible areas for improvement in order to strengthen their knowledge and skills in this field. The aim is to help them become catalysts for the cultural change represented by the incorporation of natural capital in decision-making in their respective companies and organisations.
This project is funded by the Fundación Biodiversidad of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO)), through the Empleaverde Program , an initiative for the promotion and improvement of employment, entrepreneurship and the environment. It is co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) in the framework of the Operational Programme for Employment, Training and Education 2014-2020.
