Especially after the unfortunate health crisis in which we are still embroiled, the evidence that the crisis of nature loss we face is also an economic and financial crisis – with short-term and large-scale effects – is clearer than ever.
This has led to a growing recognition of the need for the business sector, the main beneficiary of the resources and services provided by natural ecosystems, to be sufficiently aware of its relationship with nature and to contribute to its protection, maintenance and enhancement. To this end, it is crucial that companies better identify, measure, value and prioritise their impacts and dependencies on nature, i.e. that they integrate nature into their decision-making.
Carrying out this mission is not easy. It requires time, knowledge and specific resources (human and material) which, with the right theoretical and practical guidance, are feasible and achievable for any organisation.
Depending on the training and capacity building needs of the recipients of this action, as well as the level of integration of the natural capital approach in the decision making of their organisations, this action offers different training itineraries adapted to beginner, advanced or ambassador profiles of natural capital.
More specifically, the training and capacity building modules defined include concrete and approachable steps for each profile to follow on the natural capital path according to their starting point. The objective of this action is to improve participants’ knowledge of the natural capital approach and ecosystem services, with a special emphasis on the importance of recognising the value of biodiversity.
Participants in this training action will have at their disposal materials aimed at:
Online learning will be carried out through the use of appropriate IT and communication platforms and media, video tutorials, virtual classes, specific documentation in different formats (documents, presentations, infographics, etc.), self-assessment and quality questionnaires.

With the aim of responding to regional and national challenges related to biodiversity from the perspective of the natural capital approach, this training action will be carried out taking into account the results of actions FD-1 and FD-2, in which executives, middle management and staff from the sustainability and environmental areas of organisations were trained in the natural capital approach and the valuation of ecosystem services.
The objective of this training action is to dynamise strategies and plans that promote the necessary systemic change in companies through the application of the natural capital approach and the analysis of professional competences. To this end, people who have previously participated in the FD-1 and FD-2 training actions will be selected to help them become catalysts of the cultural change in their organisations that represents the commitment to the incorporation of natural capital in decision-making.
Experts in disciplines related to natural capital approaches from different fields (academia, administration, business sector, professional organisations, employers’ organisations, trade unions, NGOs and other civil society organisations, among others) will also be part of this action.
A space will be set up on the website of the Natural Capital Factory (Spanish hub of the Capitals Coalition), where different actors will be able to share their knowledge and experience and contribute to providing solutions to the major regional challenges related to the preservation and improvement of natural capital.
In addition, interviews, panel discussions and workshops will be organised through virtual platforms (Teams, Zoom…) to complete the advisory sessions in order to improve the competences in this field and the market situation of the selected individuals.
