This pioneering report examines how market instruments can finance the restoration and conservation of <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em>, a seagrass species endemic of the Mediterranean. Posidonia is a key natural ecosystem for marine biodiversity and society; however, its value is underrecognized in economic terms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed within the framework of the ARTEMIS project, the report highlights how restoring these marine plants can generate considerable ecological, social, and financial value. Through innovative financial tools, such as <strong>blue carbon credits and marine biodiversity credits <\/strong>\u2014currently under development\u2014 and <strong>payments for ecosystem services (PES),<\/strong> a unique opportunity is presented to boost the sustainable blue economy and comply with the commitments of <strong>Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework <\/strong><em>(KMGBF)<\/em>, especially<strong> Target 3 <\/strong>(30x30: protect 30% of terrestrial and<strong> <\/strong>marine areas by 2030) and <strong>Target 19 <\/strong>(mobilize substantial financial resources for the conservation of biological diversity).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key conclusions of the report<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ecological value of Posidonia meadows<\/strong>: These marine ecosystems offer essential benefits, such as coastal protection against erosion, improved water quality, marine biodiversity preservation, and carbon sequestration\u2014contributing to both climate change mitigation and adaptation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Innovative financial instruments<\/strong>: The report highlights the potential of&nbsp;<strong>blue&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>carbon<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>marine<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>biodiversity&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>payments for ecosystem services (PES)<\/strong>&nbsp;as key mechanisms to finance restoration projects for these ecosystems and generate sustainable income.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pilot cases in the Mediterranean,<\/strong>: Under the ARTEMIS framework, restoration projects&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/artemis.interreg-euro-med.eu\/2025\/06\/10\/restoring-posidonia-in-greece\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>have been implemented at various sites across the Mediterranean<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;providing valuable data on costs, outcomes, and restoration effectiveness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Investment opportunities<\/strong>: Growing demand for nature-based solutions and the support of European policies, such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/ES\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32022L2464\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><strong>the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;(<em>CSRD<\/em>)<\/strong>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/ES\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:52025DC0374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><strong>European Commission\u2019s 2025 roadmap for nature credits&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;position Posidonia restoration as a key opportunity for investors interested in environmental and economic impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vision and commitment to the future of marine ecosystems<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paula Castillo<\/strong>, Marine Environment and Environmental Markets Consultant at Ecoacsa, emphasizes that \"degraded marine ecosystems bring rising hidden costs that surpass the costs of taking action and protecting the sea.
