Den Hague Business Accord on Natural Capital

To contribute to the sustainable management and conservation of natural capital a number of companies have committed to work on the theme of natural capital in the post Platform Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Economy (PBEE) era (i.e. 2017 and beyond) and to integrate the subject more deeply in their daily operations using some practical business steps. The commitment made by these companies is set out in the Den Hague Business Accord on Natural Capital.

Corporate frontrunners support the Den Haag Business Accord on Natural Capital. This is a diverse group of large, internationally operating companies, small and medium sized enterprises, and start-ups. Each and every one of those companies has already embraced the necessary changes, in their corporate strategies, and in their value chains. Because dealing in a responsible manner with natural capital reduces dependency and offers opportunities.

The Natural Capital Summit, a leading forum on sustainable  management of natural resources

• The natural capital was presented as the basis for a circular economy and the key towards sustainable growth

• The Natural Capital Summit is an event organised by Ecoacsa Reserva de Biodiversidad, Fundación CONAMA and Fundación Global Nature

• The event was supported by partner companies like Calidad Pascual, Ferrovial, Gas Natural Fenosa, LafargeHolcim and Red Eléctrica de España

Madrid, 7 October 2016. The Natural Capital Summit was held on October 5 and 6 in Madrid. The well-attended event has gathered experts, companies, administrations and non-for-profit entities that are innovating in natural capital management and who shared their successful experiences regarding the sustainable use of natural resources.

The participants had the chance to learn first-hand the barriers and challenges related to the integration of natural capital in business strategies as well as the opportunities identified by those entities that have already taken the first steps.

The Natural Capital Summit was organized by Ecoacsa Reserva de Biodiversidad, Fundación CONAMA and Fundación Global Nature and included more than 60 speakers from national and international entities. The event has provided participants with an overview of the emerging natural capital sector, from its European framework and development to its main tools and the opportunities in terms of corporate innovation and new business models. In addition, the event addressed the role of administrations and entities in the third sector as key collaborators for the introduction and development of suitable resource management initiatives.

One of the most relevant addressed concepts was the Natural Capital Protocol, a standardized framework designed to provide reliable information to businesses about their relationship with the environment and facilitate the decision-making process based on reliable indicators related to the natural capital.

The countdown to the Natural Capital Summit begins

The countdown to the Natural Capital Summit has begun. The event will take place in Madrid on 5 th and 6th October and is organised by Ecoacsa Reserva de Biodiversidad, Fundación CONAMA and Fundación Global Nature with the aim of bringing the natural capital concept closer to Spain, show the opportunities offered by its integration into organisations and various initiatives being developed at national and international level.

This conference will be dedicated to finding answers to questions such as: What is natural capital? What is natural capital for? In what extent does natural capital benefit companies and society? What international initiatives exist? How can natural capital be measured and valued? This information is critical in order to inform long-term decisions that benefit people, planet and profit.

The presentation of the  Natural Capital Coalition’s first global Natural Capital Protocol, will play a key role in the Summit. The Coalition is made up of over 200 organizations from over 24 countries and extending over 5 continents. They have worked collaboratively with over 40 leading organisations in the development of the Natural Capital Protocol and two supporting Sector Guides: the Food & Beverage and Apparel Sector Guides. The Protocol provides businesses with a standardized framework with which to measure and value their direct and indirect impacts and dependencies on natural capital, and guidance on how to use this information to inform strategic decision making in business.

Numerous national and international actors from a wide range of industries in both the public and private sectors will participate in the event, and will take the opportunity  to share their knowledge of the challenges and opportunities involved in systematically integrating their relationships with nature into the core strategy and operations of their organisations.

The Summit is additionally supported by the European Commission through the Business@Biodiversity initiative, central, regional and local administrations as well as Forética, only Spanish representative of World Business Council of Sustainable Development (WBCSD), and Asociación para la Sostenibilidad y el Progreso de las Sociedades (ASYPS —Association for Sustainability and Societies Progress—).
